Not as simple as you would think; here we look at finding game ratings in the iTunes App Store.

The video games available in the iTunes App Store are rated by the ESRB the same way that video games designed for consoles like the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and Nintendo Wii are. These ratings are designed to give parents a heads up regarding the type of content that younger players will experience during the game. For example, a game with a rating of “12+” is designed for kids who are 12 years of age or older. These ratings can help you make informed decisions regarding what types of games your kids can play on their iPod Touch, iPhone or iPad devices. Finding these ratings is easy – you just have to know where you need to look inside the iTunes App Store.

Step 1

Open Apple’s iTunes software on your computer of choice, either by clicking the desktop icon or by finding and clicking the “iTunes” icon in the “iTunes” folder of your “Start” menu. Both icons will display the program, complete with your full media library, on screen.

Step 2

Locate the “iTunes Store” section of the column on the left side of the screen. Select the first option from this section, labeled “iTunes Store,” to open the Apple iTunes store on your computer.

Step 3

Click once inside the white box in the upper left corner of the window labeled “Search Store.” Type the name of the application that you want to research into the box and hit the “Enter” button on your keyboard to perform a search of the store for that particular app.

Note that if you have no particular game title in mind and just want to browse, click the “App Store” button at the top of the main iTunes Store window and select “Games” to browse the games that are available in the store.

Step 4

Click the name of the appropriate application in the “Search” results in the main portion of the iTunes window. The product page for that particular application will load.

Step 5

Scroll down to the center of the product page that you’re viewing. On the left side of the screen, just below the “Purchase” or “Download” buttons, will be a recommended age rating for the game in question. Below the rating will also be a list of content found in the game that parents might find questionable. If one game features realistic depictions of violence, for example, that information would be listed in the “Rating” portion of the product page. You can now use this information to make informed decisions regarding what types of games your kids can and cannot play on their iPod Touch, iPhone or iPad devices.
