bringing the iPhone, iPod Touch and for the first time the iPad on the same version number of iOS.
It’s coming, the great new iOS version, 4.2! Is it special? Yes, definately! In some ways… iOS 4.2 is the great unification update, bringing the iPhone, iPod Touch and for the first time the iPad on the same version number of iOS.Will it be worthwile to upgrade?Yes, if you have an iPad. The iPad is currently still running iOS version 3.2, so if you can now upgrade to 4.2, the featurelist is huge: Multitasking, folders, and unified inbox from iOS 4.0 plus the Game Center and TV show rentals from iOS 4.1, and now even AirPlay video sharing and AirPrint wireless printing which are new to iOS 4.2.So not really, if you have an iPhone or iPod Touch which was already running iOS 4.1, the only new things you get then are:
AirplayDo you remember Airtunes? The feature in iTunes that lets you stream music on Windows or Mac to your Apple TV or Airport Express connected speakers. AirPlay takes that one step further, letting you stream video and pictures as well as music from your iPad or iPhone or iPod touch or the new 2010 Apple TV.Sounds interesting, no?
AirPrintApple’s wireless printing system. This will enable you to print pages to almost every printer which is connected to the same WIFI network, or, even directly to some printers (HP already announced one). Needless to say that this is some huge functionality, that was indeed missing before.
Safari lets you find text in the pageYes, it’s finally an option! albeit a bit hidden still, since you still need to use the Google search box, but while you’re typing your search term, your iDevice will show you suggestions, from Google, and from “on this page”. Handy? Yes indeed.
Looking forward to iOS 4.2? No worries, rumors say it will be available as of November 7th! So keep your eyes open!
